How to Help Afghan Refugees in Norfolk

Below are a few suggestions of ways you and your school can help Afghan refugees arriving in Norfolk

CREATE A WELCOME CARD

Create a class welcome card to be shared with Afghan families.

Several Afghan families have already arrived in the Greater Norwich area and the ‘People from Abroad Team’ at Norfolk County Council have invited schools to make welcome cards for them and for the families that will follow.

(Please contact us at info@norfolksos.co.uk to let us know if your school choose to send a card)

DONATIONS

Encourage your staff and the pupil's families to donate and or volunteer.

Norfolk County Council are in need of specific items to furnish homes for Afghan families. Having a furnished home will help them to settle in sooner and to feel more supported. Click here to view the NCC webpage that lists the items that are most needed.

Please consider sharing this information with your school community and encouraging them to donate or volunteer. You can arrange for your school to be a collection point for donations and the ‘People from Abroad Team’ will come and collect donations from your setting.

FUNDRAISING

Organise a fundraiser for The Bishop’s Fund or for New Routes Integration.

There are some excellent local organisations that support refugee and asylum-seeking families. If your school would like to support them in their work, consider holding a non-uniform day, a bake sale or an event in order to raise much needed funds.

CONTRIBUTE

Contribute to a valuable resource: The Children and Young People’s Guide to Norwich and Norfolk

Norfolk Schools of Sanctuary would like to dedicate a section of our website to serve as a guide for young refugees who are new to Norwich and Norfolk. We want to help them feel at home and encourage them to discover all of the exciting things there are to do in our region.

We will be starting by asking school pupils to tell us about their favourite places in Norfolk. Where are their favourite places to visit? What do they like about them?

If your school is interested in contributing, please e-mail Jake at info@norfolksos.co.uk for more information.
