Friday 12 June 2020

A Day of Welcome is a day of solidarity and learning in schools that aims to build a culture of welcome and understanding for refugees and asylum seekers.

The celebration is designed to support schools and families in marking Refugee Week (15-19th June) and to send a clear message that for those in need of sanctuary, our communities are welcoming places.

This year, due to the school closures, A Day of Welcome will be a largely digital event. We will provide ideas, resources and activities that make it easy for schools and families that are home-learning, to take part.

Our Aims

1

To build understanding of the experiences and contributions of refugees and asylum seekers.

2

To uncover and celebrate little-known stories of refugee migration.

3

To signpost Refugee Week events which pupils, families and staff may wish to participate in.

Who is it for?

A Day of Welcome is for both schools and for families who are home learning. You will find activities suitable for all ages on our Resources page. It is an opportunity to engage with issues relating to refugee migration, and to understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary.

What does it involve?

There is no fixed template for how A Day of Welcome should operate. You can pick and choose what fits your situation from our bank or resources and recommendations. It is designed to be a focal point for children and young people to be involved with Refugee Week 2020 (15-19th June).

What inspired us?

The resources for A Day of Welcome 2020 were inspired by the incredible, but little known, stories of the Basque child refugees who came to Norfolk and Cambridge during the Spanish Civil War. You can learn more about their stories at the Havens East online exhibition when it launches on 12th June for A Day of Welcome.

Visit our Resources page to find everything that you will need for your school and/or family to participate in A Day of Welcome.

Please don’t forget to let us know that you will be participating, by emailing us on [email protected]

A Day of Welcome 2020 has been organised in collaboration with Anglia Ruskin University
