A Day of Welcome is a day of solidarity and learning in schools that aims to build a culture of welcome and understanding for refugees and asylum seekers.

The celebration is designed to support schools and families across the UK in marking Refugee Week (17-23rd June) and to send a clear message that for those in need of sanctuary, our communities are welcoming places.

From its humble beginnings in Norfolk, A Day of Welcome now embraces a nationwide spirit of inclusion and welcome and everyone is welcome to join in! Regardless of where you are, we will provide you with ideas, resources and activities that make it easy for schools to participate. Now in its fifth year, our initiative proudly signposts and provides resources that are tailored to the contexts of various local areas and counties., from Norwich, to Cardiff and beyond.

Our Aims

1

To build understanding of the experiences and contributions of refugees and asylum seekers.

2

To uncover and celebrate little-known stories of refugee migration.

3

To signpost Refugee Week events which pupils, families and staff may wish to participate in.

Who is it for?

Wherever you are based, A Day of Welcome is an opportunity for schools to engage with issues relating to refugee migration, and to understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary. Schools can register to receive exclusive access to resources, suitable for their age group. Additionally, we provide a local offer for schools based in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk, West Yorkshire and Wales. Schools in these areas have access to additional resources and suggestions for their context in order to help them build a culture of welcome and explore local refugee histories.

What does involve?

There is no fixed template for how A Day of Welcome should operate. You can pick and choose what fits your situation from the resources and recommendations that you will receive. It is designed to be a focal point for children and young people to be involved with Refugee Week 2023 (17-23rd June). What inspired us?

A Day of Welcome aims to shine a spotlight on stories of refugee migration from the past and to build a culture of welcome and understanding for refugees and asylum seekers in the present. The theme for some of our new resources for A Day of Welcome 2024 will be 'heritage languages'.
